Manufactured by Aperam, Type K thermocouple wires consist of a positive leg (KP) containing 90% nickel and 10% chromium, and a negative leg (KN) composed of nickel, copper, and silicon. The fact that the negative leg is melted with copper-nickel-silicon content instead of aluminium provides very high stability in use at high temperatures. Thanks to its very wide operating range from -200°C to 1260°C, it offers high accuracy and reliability even in the most demanding applications, from industrial heat treatments to nuclear reactors.
Type K has a better resistance to oxidation than other types of thermocouples and is particularly recommended for oxidizing or inert atmospheres. However, it should not be used without protection in sulphurous atmospheres, in reducing atmospheres, or for a long time in a vacuum. In reducing atmospheres, a green oxide known as "green rot" develops, which decreases the chromium content, resulting in a reduction in EMF output, damage to the metallurgical structure, and causing the wire to become magnetic.
